Having a good resume is imperative in your job search and it’s something you’ll want to continually update and improve. If you’re on the market for a new job in a technical field, here are some ways to format your resume to reflect the unusual year we’ve had.

What to include
While everyone knows to list their job experience, for those in the technical field it’s also important to highlight your technical skills such as Agile, Scrum, etc. The technical skills you highlight should be relevant to the role you are applying for, so adjust accordingly. Along the same lines, list any IT Certifications you have such as A+ CompTIA. In addition to your experience and hard skills, think outside the box and list any recent volunteer experience you may have. Listing your volunteer experience will give hiring managers an idea of your personality/interests and show transferable soft skills you may have.

Show your flexibility
At a time when many technical employers are having their employees work remotely (either full-time or part-time) it’s important to show your flexibility and the physical environments you’ve worked in in the past. If you’ve successfully been able to complete your projects or manage a team entirely remotely, make that information known. It’s important to show you’re a responsive and flexible employee and can work in any environment.

Make it mobile friendly
When formatting your resume, think of how it would appear on a mobile device. You’ll want to ensure it’s concise (no more than 2 pages), has a clean font, and plenty of white space. When selecting fonts, chose those that are modern and neat such as Calibri, Corbel, or Arial. It’s also a good idea to format and send your resume as a PDF unless the company specifies otherwise. PDF’s will read better on a mobile device than a Word document which requires the recipient have Microsoft Word installed on their phone.

We hope these tips are useful and help you land your next IT role. If you need assistance on your job search, reach out to our team at SNI Technology who can help not only with your resume, but also assist in you landing that dream role.
